What does a great strategy day actually look like? Here's what happened when MS-UK trusted me with theirs.

MS-UK, is a charity supporting people affected by multiple sclerosis.

They came to me with an ambitious brief: bring together their staff team and board of trustees for a day that would help them develop their Theory of Change and lay the groundwork for their three-year strategy. As an organisation that is deeply community-led, it was also vital that the voices and needs of the MS community stayed central throughout.

That's a lot to achieve in a single day. But it's exactly the kind of challenge I love!

Starting with clarity

Before we got anywhere near the day, I sat down with the CEO to work through what success would actually look like. What did they need to walk away with? What conversations had to happen? Where were the gaps in shared understanding?

From there, I designed a programme of activities that would work for the whole group, accounting for different learning styles, energy levels, and the mix of staff and trustees who'd be in the room together.

What the day looked like in practice

We moved. We talked. We got creative. We thought critically.

The day was deliberately varied. A mixture of exercises that helped people connect, think differently, and build the kind of psychological safety that makes honest, productive conversations possible.

By the end, the group had a shared understanding of what Theory of Change is and what theirs should include, a wealth of ideas for how MS-UK could better meet the needs of their community in the years ahead, and the momentum and clarity to take those ideas forward into their strategy.

Here's what their CEO said afterwards:

"Effie's open approach meant that everyone felt comfortable contributing their ideas, and the different activities lent really well to the different learning and collaboration styles in the room, enabling enthusiasm and creative thinking... I'm sure people will be referring to it for years to come."

The bigger picture

What struck me most about working with MS-UK wasn't just the energy in the room. It was their honesty about where they were and where they wanted to go.

Like many organisations, they're navigating real challenges. They're facing them with clarity, ambition, and a genuine commitment to their community.

That's exactly the kind of organisation I love working with.

Could this be you?

If you lead or work within an organisation and you're at a point where you need to align your teams, develop or refresh your strategy, create space for honest conversations and thinking, or bring staff and board together in a way that actually works, I'd love to have a conversation.

I work with organisations to design and facilitate away days, strategy sessions, and leadership workshops that are purposeful, inclusive, and genuinely productive.
